Job Description

Border Engineering Training Association (BETA) is an approved training provider which manages and assess apprentices in manufacturing companies in and around the Scottish Borders. Currently we are now looking for young individuals who are interested in a Modern Apprenticeship and are willing to work in companies in the Scottish Borders in towns such as Peebles, Dunns, Kelso, Jedburgh, Hawick. The apprenticeships available are as follows:

Engineering Maintenance (Engineering Systems)

In this role you will work on equipment that is both mechanical and electrical. Machines are usually highly automated and require a very high level skill set to maintain them. Knowledge of electrical, mechanical and plc would be taught during you apprenticeship. As with all apprenticeships you will also attend college to gain a NC & HNC electrical plus the SVQ level 2 PEO. Further educational opportunities may become available depending on attitude and grades achieved during your training.

Engineering Manufacturing (Fitting & Assembly)

Depending on the company you could be workng on computer controlled equipment producing highly accurate components to manufacturing large vessels. In each case you will learn all the basic manufacturing skills from turning, milling, fitting and assembly, welding and fabrication. This will lead onto your specialism depending what your company requires. Knowledge of manufacturing systems and engineering systems will be taught.  As with all apprenticeships you will also attend college to gain a NC & HNC Engineering systems plus the SVQ level 2 PEO. Further educational opportunities may become available depending on attitude and grades achieved during your training

Business Improvements Techniques (Process improvement)

This job will examine processes that you are to improve using a six sigma process following a recognised system known as Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve and Control (DMIAC). It will require you working as part of a team or leading a team in looking at processes and possibly carrying out statistical analyses on gathered data where by you and your team will come up with solutions to improve the process. Part of your training will be to go around the shop floor to get a good understanding of the business, learning as many processes from the shop floor point of view.  As with all apprenticeships you will also attend college to gain a NC and HNC electrical plus the SVQ level 2 PEO. Further educational opportunities may become available depending on attitude and grades achieved during your training.

Entry Requirements

Minimum to be National 5 English, Maths and a science subject (Chemistry or Physics) at grade B or above.

Training

All Engineering Maintenance and Business Improvement Technique apprentices will attend Borders college in Galashiels where they will attend the follwing courses; PEO SVQ at level 2, NC Electrical and HNC Electrical, minimum.

All Engineering Manufacturing apprentices will attend Edinburgh college at Hardinggreen, Dalkeith where they will attend the following courses, PEO SVQ at level 2, NC Engineering systems and HNC Engineering systems minimum.

On successful completion of the above courses and their SVQ level 3 discipline specific apprentices will gain a Modern Apprenticeship certificate from the sector skills council SEMTA.

Many of the apprentices attending these course and working at these companies who are offering these apprenticeship have gone onto leadership roles either within the organisation they did their apprenticeship or moved onto other organisations.
