Manufacturing industries make lots of things we use every day.
Making things is what manufacturing is all about
you process raw materials
you assemble items to make the finished product
and production controllers make sure everything is up to standard.
The food and drink sector employs about 49,000 in Scotland, making products such as:
bread, biscuits, cakes and tinned, dried or frozen fruit and vegetables
meat products, like sausages and pies, as well as sweets and savoury snacks
beers, lagers and (especially in Scotland) whisky.
Scotland will need about 16,000 new workers in this sector between now and 2017.
Furniture manufacturing is a small sector, but job prospects are likely to be steady.
If you are going to work in food manufacturing, you must be practical, responsible, reliable and methodical. You must be health, safety and hygiene conscious.
