Buying, selling and related work is one of the biggest employers in Scotland. In retail alone there are 240,000 workers, 10% of the workforce. A lot of these are women and 50% of them work part time.

Most Modern Apprenticeships in this career area are currently in retail and sales. The government is funding an extra 2,000 retail Modern Apprenticeships in 2009-2010.
